The start of this walk is only about one and a half miles from Richmond and so affords a good chance to explore Richmond itself. Richmond is a very picturesque and interesting ancient market town. It has a large cobbled square, the Richmond Museum and Green Howards Museum, Georgian architecture and theatre, as well as its sturdy castle with its promenade walkway round the outer wall overlooking the River Swale. There is also a pleasant riverside picnic area to enjoy. The walk itself has a wonderfully tranquil feel about it, passing through woods and over stone-walled fields above the beautiful River Swale, before returning along the heights of Whitcliffe Scar with its enchanting views over Applegarth, Swaledale and Richmond.
