A superb walk full of interest that runs between Barnard Castle and Cotherstone. The route follows the River Tees upstream on the outward leg and then downstream on the return leg and sticks as closely as is legally possible to the river, following the route of the Teesdale Way for the vast majority of the walk.
From the Demesnes riverside car park in Barnard Castle the route passes the remains of the Norman castle before entering the wooded riverside path. Undulating walking then follows before the route leaves the river and climbs out of the valley. The remainder of the outward section of the route then passes through a series of fields high above the river before descending to intersect the footbridge where the route crosses the River Tees. The return leg starts with a climb out of the valley where the walk bypasses Cotherstone. The route continues to rise and fall as the walk intersects the old abutments of a former railway viaduct before lane- and field-walking delivers you back to Barnard Castle across a pedestrian footbridge.
