Bedburn – Doctors Gate – Pikeston Fell – Meeting of the Grains – Potato Hill – Low Redford – Hamsterley Forest Visitor Centre - Bedburn

A classic hike initially on the remote moors to the north of Hamsterley Forest with a very pleasant ramble through the forest itself to end the walk. The long route across the moor is very easy to follow due to the owners of the land providing a great network of shooters' tracks. The tracks through the forest have been in existence for much longer and are well-signposted. All of the route on the moors and in the forest is within Open Access Land.

The walk starts from the hamlet of Bedburn nestled in the valley of the same name at the entrance access road to Hamsterley Forest. An initial walk up a rising road is followed by a pleasant ramble along a flat, enclosed, grassy lane to reach the Open Access Land of Pikeston Fell. A great panoramic hike then ensues as the route follows a series of wide, stony shooters' tracks across this remote moorland. The route initially heads west across the mainly flat moor before changing direction north and then again west, where it eventually rises briefly to arrive at the highest point of the walk. From here is all downhill as the route changes direction east and gradually descends Pikeston Fell to arrive at a large oasis of grass in the midst of a huge area of heather. Further moorland-walking follows as the route heads across the lower slopes of Hamsterley Moor to arrive at Hamsterley Forest. The final lap of the walk follows easy tracks through the picturesque forest past the Visitor Centre to leave the forest for a short walk back to Bedburn.
