Billy Row - Thornley - Tow Law - East Hedleyhope - Stanley Crook - Billy Row
The village of Billy Row lies on the side of a steep hill and straddles the road that runs between lowly Crook and lofty Stanley-Crook. The walk from here follows mildly undulating terrain through fields and along lanes to the sleepy village of Thornley and includes a brief trip through a steep-sided, wooded gully. From Thornley there is a pleasant walk along the edge of an escarpment with great panoramic views looking up Weardale, before the terrain rises to Tow Law, the highest point of the walk. A long, very pleasant track then leads you gradually down through the upper reaches of the Deerness Valley, ending with a walk through a delightful wood alongside the River Deerness to intersect the hamlet of East Hedleyhope. From here the route climbs steadily on a wide dirt track to Stanley Hall Farm, one of the highest points of the walk. A little lane-walking with a ramble through a dense wood then follows before the walk intersects the railway path that delivers you most of the way back to Billy Row.
