A pleasant walk from Bishop Auckland that includes a section of railway path, fields, riverside paths, lanes and a fair amount of road-walking, albeit it on quiet roads with very little traffic. The route passes close to the famous Binchester Roman Fort and passes around three sides of the site where the spectacular Kynren open air pageant is staged.
The walk starts from the Batts area of Bishop Auckland and passes under Newton Cap viaduct before crossing the River Wear to once again pass under the viaduct. After passing the entrance to Kynren the route follows a railway path and then a little riverside walking to take the walker to the farthest point of the walk.
The route then crosses the River Wear and turns south to start the return leg of the walk. A section of lane- and road-walking follows before the route once again takes to fields and woods. The final section of the route is easy flat road-walking alongside the river to return to the car park.
