A gentle stroll through fields and forest takes you from Coniston up to Tarn Hows. The walk then circles the tarn, before descending through forest back to the banks of Coniston Water. A reward at the end is a pint of the local Bluebird ale at the Black Bull Inn.

Walked today. Beautiful walk and the ice cream van is still at WP10! Route is easy to follow and accurate. No stiles which is great if you have a dog.

We enjoyed this walk very much. Contrary to the earlier comments we found the directions at WP10 to be absolutely correct. Exactly as in the photo - including ice cream van!

This is a great walk with lots of variety. The directions are clear and easy to follow, but note the advice in previous comments especially at WP10 where the correct path now doesn't pass through the car park at all. As an alternative to the last section (from WP12) which is adjacent to a road you can follow the footpath marked a few yards before WP12 which takes you over High Guards. This is marked on the map and brings you back to WP3. Indeed WP3 is a good place to start the walk as there is roadside parking and within 100m pay parking at the local sports facility.

Waypoint 10: the track no longer starts at the back of the car park but on the road, as shown on the map. It rises with the NT Info centre/ toilets below it on its right and at the back of the car park, passing above the black patch (rocks) on the left of the picture. Was the NT building there when the walk was first put on-line? Jim Grindle.

Quite a lot of sheep at the beginning and a fair bit of road at the end both needing leads but otherwise pretty dog friendly.

An absolutely beautiful walk although we did struggle with the initial directions. Basically, as you leave Coniston car park you will see the Internet cafe in front of you. Turn right down Tiberthwaite Avenue and then you can't go wrong. Well maybe you can when you arrive at point 7 to discover that both the stile and the deer fence have been removed [there are some remnants left to give you a clue though].

This is a much better approach to Tarn Hows than Windermere. We did it when quiet. I can thoroughly recommend a pint of Bluebird at the end!
