The walk is to the north of Coniston, through an attractive woodland by a permitted path before going along an almost deserted lane, a dead-end which does not encourage motorists. Tilberthwaite Ghyll can be seen at close quarters by a short detour before a stream crossing takes you into a shallow valley beneath the flanks of Wetherlam. This area is full of old mine workings with a great deal of visible remains and makes use of the tracks constructed by the miners for their own use. These have sunk back into the bogs in some places, but for the most part make for very easy walking. It is hard to realise that you have been climbing for some time, but just after passing a tarn there is a sudden and spectacular view of Coniston Water far below you, with the Lead Mines Valley immediately below. The track is engineered in zigzags down the fellside and an easy return to Coniston follows a beck with numerous waterfalls.
