The start point is The Coombe Cellars public house on the River Teign estuary between Newton Abbot and Shaldon. The route then follows the river on Templer Way, along which granite was exported from Dartmoor to Teignmouth. Leaving the river, the route goes to Penn Inn on the outskirts of Newton Abbot, climbs through Milber and Ben Stedham's Woods, drops down to the village of Netherton and then back to The Coombe Cellars.

Birdlife on the river includes white egrets, herons, kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails and mallards. Shelduck appear in large numbers during the winter, along with cormorants and goosanders. Swans nest and breed along the edge of the racecourse at Newton Abbot and appear downstream.

Thanks Ian for your kind comments and you are correct about the length of the walk, it should have been 8.9 km, about 5.5 miles. Sorry for the confusion but I forgot Quo measurements are metric not imperial. Regards Keith

Surprisingly lovely walk, river, woods, fields, views. Had no idea there was such a lovely footpath alongside the A380 - completely hidden. Shame about the noise but neverless excellent. Driven past Milber Wood countless times and never realised it was there ! Only 'negative' comment. The distance was not 8.7 miles. Looks closer to 6 miles on the OS and according to our time taken.. ????
