An enjoyable circular walk from Cotherstone in Teesdale, along the side valley of Balderdale to Hury Reservoir. The westbound route on the outward journey mainly traverses Cotherstone Moor on the south side of the dale, to the farthest point of the walk at the hamlet of West Briscoe on the shores of Hury Reservoir. The return eastbound leg is entirely through pleasant grazing fields back to Cotherstone.
The walk from Cotherstone Village rises gradually along lanes and through fields, then a little road-work to arrive at the Open Access Land of Cotherstone Moor. The first half of the route across the moor is on clearly defined tracks, unlike the last part of the moor where navigation is reliant on line of sight and / or compass bearings. Near West Briscoe the route leaves the Open Access Land for a little road-walking that passes beneath the huge earth dam of Hury Reservoir. The return leg of the walk back to Cotherstone is entirely through a series of grassy fields lying to the north of the River Balder, with the exception of one visit through a deep wooded gully.
