A walk around Teesdale in the area lying just to the west of Barnard Castle. The route is in three distinct sections. Firstly heading south from Cotherstone through fields to intersect the Deepdale Wood. Then a long interesting walk through the undulating wood follows as the route heads east. The final third of the route back to Cotherstone through mainly fields and lanes is almost all fairly flat walking.
The walk starts from the village green in Cotherstone and leaves the village along a minor road before heading south through fields and a steep gully to intersect and cross a metalled road. The route continues south through more fields to intersect Deepdale Wood, through which runs the Deepdale Beck. This is a long walk through this narrow wood, almost always on good tracks except for the muddy wet area at the top, western end of the wood. Parts of the track rise high above the stream and are occasionally narrow with steep drops on the right. The route emerges from the wood at the village of Startforth across the river from Barnard Castle. The route then changes direction and heads north-west, following the line of the River Tees to intersect and cross the old Barnard Castle to Bowes railway line. The rest of the walk back to Cotherstone is through fields, with a little lane-walking at the end.
