The route covers a variety of terrain including fields, lanes, tranquil riverside paths, stunning woodland and open moorland, all in all a very gratifying walk.
From the ancient village of Cotherstone the walk intersects, then follows, the route of the River Tees through mainly flat farmlands except for a steep section through Grise Beck Wood, before arriving at the remaining bridge abutments of the long-gone Tees Railway Viaduct.
The walk then descends almost to river level to arrive at the eastern end of Deepdale Wood, from where it heads west to traverse the full 2.75-mile length of the wood. The route next turns north through a series of fields as well as a steep gorge, before once again heading west to experience a long section of open moorland, with great panoramic views. The final lap back to Cotherstone is a mix of field, wooded gorge, railway path and road-walking.
