Cow Green Reservoir - Pennine Way - Cauldron Snout - Cow Green Reservoir

There are stupendous views throughout this lovely walk, which embraces moorland and riverside habitat within the Moor Park – Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve. Cow Green Reservoir is your start and finish, from where you take the moorland road to branch across Widdybank Pasture. The path joins the Pennine Way at Widdybank Farm and proceeds along the banks of the stripling River Tees past Cronkley Scar, Raven Scar and Falcon Clints, to reach the spectacular cataract of Cauldron Snout. There is some necessary boulder-hopping over the clints and a clamber up rocks above the cataract, otherwise the route is along good roads, tracks and paths.

This is the 2nd time I have completed this walk, navigation is easy and apart from some of the stretches by the River Tees the walk is mainly on well made up paths and tarmacked roads. The climb up the side of Cauldron Snout is not difficult but is not for those without a head for heights. (Like my wife) The views of the waterfall are excellent and the scenery in general is beautiful, I noticed that the metal plaque on the dam wall that was there the first time I did this walk has now disappeared, probably stolen by metal thieves.
