A mildly strenuous walk from Eastgate in upper Weardale. The picturesque and panoramic route takes to the hills initially on the north side of the dale before crossing the River Wear at the famed Stanhope Ford to traverse the hills on the southern slopes of the dale. One third of the walk is unavoidably on quiet moorland roads that carry hardly any traffic.
From Eastgate the route heads north up a surfaced lane before climbing steeply at times up a walled grassy lane to intersect a metalled road at the highest point of the walk. A walk down the quiet road reveals superb views looking down the Weardale Valley. Leaving the road, the route heads through farmland before passing down through the wooded valley of the Stanhope Burn to emerge on the outskirts of Stanhope. The route then crosses the stepping-stones over the famed Stanhope Ford after which a little road-walking takes you to the fields and a series of derelict farms on the southern slopes of the dale. The walk ends with a short but steep descent from the hills before re-crossing the River Wear to return to Eastgate.
