Evenwood - Toft Hill - Low Etherley - West Auckland - Hummerbeck - Evenwood Gate
Evenwood is a village with ancient origins that increased dramatically in size during the first half of the twentieth century, due mainly to the mining of coal and the associated production of coke. All evidence of the colliery and coke works have long since gone. A notable pleasant feature of the village are the three large, separate, grassed areas.
From Evenwood the walk descends past allotments and through fields to the River Gaunless before railway path- and lane-walking starts the ascent through fields to Toft Hill. The route then skirts the northern fringe of the village to emerge into Low Etherley. A series of field-, lane- and railway path-walking follows to West Auckland, from where a long stretch of flat railway paths takes you through Hummerbeck to the southernmost point of the walk. The walk concludes through a series of fields to return to Evenwood.
