From parking at High Row we walk to Dowthwaitehead, where we start the climb up Watermillock Common to Hartside (2,480'). The view from there north down into Deepdale and over Matterdale Common is superb. After this climb the other Wainwrights come easily as we visit the northern Dodds (dodds are grass-topped hills) of Stybarrow Dodd (2,766'), Watson's Dodd (2,589'), Great Dodd (2,812') and the northern outpost of Clough Head (2,382'), which is reached after crossing the rocky outcrop of Calfhow Pike. We then descend to Mariel Bridge on The Old Coach Road and an easy walk back on the byway to High Row. If time or energy is in short supply the walk can be shortened to nine miles by taking the bridleway from Great Dodd across Matterdale Common, missing out Clough Head.
