Forest-in-Teesdale - Bracken Rigg - Holwick Scars - Harter Fell - Middleton-in-Teesdale
A linear walk with the intention of parking up in Middleton-in-Teesdale, catching the bus up to Forest-in-Teesdale and walking back through the hills. As parts of the route can be a little marshy, this walk is best tackled during the drier months of the year.
From Forest-in-Teesdale the route crosses the River Tees through Cronkley Pastures, briefly intersects the Pennine Way then climbs up onto the lower slopes of Cronkley Fell at Birk Rigg, to intersect the old drovers' road called the 'Green Trod'. The walk then heads east up onto Holwick Fell before arriving at Holwick Scar. There is then a stiff climb into and out of the gully in the scars before the route steadily rises to Green Fell and the highest point of the walk. The remainder of the walk from here is almost all downhill, as the route skirts the southern flanks of Harter Fell on Crossthwaite Common to reveal great views of the reservoirs in the pastorally serene Lunedale Valley to the south. The walk ends with a very pleasant, gentle descent of the common, with great views looking down towards Middleton-in-Teesdale, with the Monks Moor beyond and the tree-topped Kirkcarrion Bronze Age burial mound just to the right.
