This walk requires good basic observation skills and a degree of agility to climb gates and possibly a stone wall, but has inspiring views to make the difficulties well worth while. The walk starts at a high level and using the Pennine Way makes a surprisingly easy climb to the top of Fountains Fell for a stunning panoramic view. A sharp descent with a majestic view of Penyghent is followed by an attractive but tricky moorland walk in the access area and concludes with serene green pastures.

There are still a few issues at WP6 and 7. When I arrived at the bothy, the gate was unlocked but unfortunately there were three dead foxes next to the building which was a bit grim. Upon reaching the two gates mentioned on the track before Rough Close, the first one was locked and I had to climb over it. At Rough Close Farm itself there is a no walkers sign on the gate, so I walked around the wall to the left, threw my pack over and lifted the wire above the wall and sneaked through with a slight drop on the other side. When you have just walked two miles across country from the road, to have your way barred not once but twice, is a bit rich to put it mildly. I did not understand the instructions from WP11 and relied solely on my GPS to get the general route. Overall a good walk with stunning views of Pen y Ghent.
