Gainford - Winston - Barforth - Cliffe - Piercebridge - Back

This is a mostly flat, circular walk from Gainford that tracks the route of the River Tees on both sides of the river between Winston in the west and Piercebridge in the east. The terrain includes roads, wooded riverside paths, fields and lanes.

Starting from the village green in Gainford, the route follows a short section of the A67 before entering a delightful shaded riverside walk to view the famous Gainford Spa. Further pavement walking along the main road follows, before the walk enters another glorious wood as it meanders its way alongside the River Tees to intersect and cross the ancient, single-arched bridge spanning the river at Winston. From here the route changes direction to start the long middle section of the walk south of the river. Initially the route follows farm tracks that run alongside the river, before moving away through fields to arrive at the farming hamlet of Barforth. Mainly lane but with a little field-walking then follows to intersect a very minor surfaced road with almost no traffic. Further field- and lane-walking follows before the route recrosses the River Tees to enter the old Roman settlement of Piercebridge.

The final section of the walk follows a pleasant riverside path that includes a little field-walking for most of the way back to Gainford. All of the walk between Piercebridge and Winston Bridge on the north side of the river is on the route of the Teesdale Way long-distance footpath.
