This easy walk explores the knobbly countryside high above the east side of lake Windermere. There are some excellent views, especially on the outward leg and the highlight is the magnificent 360° panorama from the highest knobble, known as Rulbuts Hill. This is classified as a TUMP, hills of any height with a drop of at least thirty metres or more on all sides. The name TUMP stands for Thirty and Upward Metres Prominence. At 175m (574 feet) high it is insignificant among the Lake District hills (and overlooked by Wainwright) but the panorama rivals that from many loftier peaks. The view extends from Morecambe Bay to the south to the head of Lake Windermere to the north, with the mountains of the central Lake District beyond. The beautiful Winster Valley is spread out at your feet. Is it as good as Orrest Head? You will have to decide that for yourself, but it is certainly much quieter than that popular spot, so you stand a good chance of being able to enjoy it in peace.
