From Gilling West there follows easy, flat field-walking to the scenic hamlet of Hartforth, from where the terrain starts to rise quite appreciably through fields and woods before finally levelling out. Fairly flat field-walking follows at the highest point of the walk, with good views looking north-west towards Barnard Castle. The route then turns south along a long, undulating, pleasant farm track to emerge onto a metalled road. After a little road-walking the route enters Low Moor, an extensive tract of grassy land that was formerly Richmond Racecourse. From here the walk passes through the middle of Richmond Golf Course and carries on to enter the beautiful grounds of Aske Park, passing by the imposing Aske Hall and Stables. A little field-walking then follows for the final short lap back to Gilling West.
