Leave from the information centre (well-signposted) and take the lane to the south of the lake. The lane rises and a small gate on the left gives access to a permissive path along the shore of Rydal Water. This is left for open ground, rising gradually to a large cave and then a descent to a lane. After 1km a path leads to the open fell to the south of Loughrigg's summit. There is a maze of paths on this open ground and it can be very confusing - possibly one of the most difficult areas in the Lakes to navigate and not advised in misty conditions. A very direct descent to Loughrigg Terrace and a lovely woodland path bring you back to the lane you started on.

1st February 2009 - Rob & Denise: Really great walk with snow capped fells all around. Looking forward to it again in summer.

Fantastic walk but a bit busy at weekends. Easy to extend to circle Grasmere and back down the valley about another hour.
