This is a direct route up and down Steel Fell which overlooks Dunmail Raise and the Vale of Grasmere.

Starting off along the free roadside parking along the A591, the route follows country lanes to Helmside before starting the ascent along the long ridge called Cotra Breast. The ridge is wide and grassy though steep in places, but offers breathtaking views into Greenburn and down to Dunmail Raise. Once at the summit the views extend north past Thirlmere to Blencathra and Skiddaw. A short detour north along the summit will allow for better views into Thirlmere.

The return follows the same route back to the A591.
