Beginning in the ever-popular Lakeland village of Grasmere, this walk heads away from the crowds along a path below Helm Crag to pick up a ridge route that overlooks the valley of Easedale. The ridge leads up to the summit of Tarn Crag and overlooks the stunning Easedale Tarn.
From the summit the paths run out for a while. The route heads across the open fell keeping slightly south-west. The view then overlooks Coledale Tarn, where there is a short, steep descent to a faint path to the tarn itself.

Coledale Tarn is a small remote lake high in the mountains and rarely visited by the thousands of walkers who choose to stop at Easedale Tarn. From the tarn the main path back to Grasmere is joined, which heads down to Easedale Tarn and along the Sourmilk Gill path back to Grasmere.

Fabulous walk in the late autumn sunshine. We did this in reverse and we found the scramble up at Belles Knott was easier that way. The waterfall was in full flight, Easdale tarn was beautiful in the sun and with a gem of a hidden tarn at the top and fantastic views from Tarn Crag it was one of our favourites in the area.
