Grassholme Reservoir – Hury Reservoir – Blackton Reservoir – Balderhead Reservoir – Selset Reservoir

A walk that visits all five of the reservoirs located in the Lunedale and Baldersdale Valleys, two important tributary valleys of the much larger Teesdale. The route crosses Romaldkirk Moor between Grassholme Reservoir and Hury Reservoir on the outward leg and Hunderthwaite and Mickleton Moors between Balderhead Reservoir and Selset Reservoir on the return leg.

The walk starts from the Visitor Centre car park at the northern end of Grassholme Reservoir in the Lunedale Valley. A stiff climb follows, up to and across Romaldkirk Moor before descending the moor to arrive at Hury Reservoir, the first of the three reservoirs in the Baldersdale Valley. A great walk along the northern shorelines of Hury Reservoir and then Blackton Reservoir where the route intersects Birk Hat Farm, famous as the home of former farmer turned TV celebrity Hannah Hauxwell. A stiff pull up to the huge Balderhead Dam is the next challenge before the route leaves Baldersdale and heads north up and across Hunderthwaite Moor and then Mickleton Moor to re-intersect Grassholme Reservoir in the Lunedale Valley. A pleasant but stiff climb then follows as the route passes through the Selset Reservoir car park before intersecting a metalled road. From here the remainder of the route is either downhill or on the flat as the route descends to return to Grassholme Reservoir. A very pleasant ramble along the northern shoreline of the reservoir follows before the walk crosses the reservoir dam to return into the Visitor Centre car park.
