High Force - Cronkley Fell - Forest-in-Teesdale Circular

A great hike to visit the spectacular High Force waterfall and the panoramic Cronkley Fell in the Moor House National Nature Reserve, located in the Open Access land of the ruggedly beautiful Upper Teesdale.

The walk starts from the car park next to the High Force Hotel, then briefly heads east alongside the River Tees before crossing the river and heading west along the Pennine Way. The route soon arrives at the High Force Waterfall on the south side of the river to see the falls from one of the best viewpoints, before continuing west to follow the Pennine Way as far as Bracken Rigg Hill. The walk then leaves the Pennine Way to intersect an ancient drovers road known as the 'Green Trod' and enter Open Access land. The wide, grassy track leads up onto Cronkley Fell, where the route briefly leaves the 'Trod' to visit the trig point on the summit of the fell, near to a large pond.

The walk then returns to the Trod to continue across to the eastern edge of the fell plateau, where the route descends to re-intersect the River Tees at Falcon Clints, an area of Widdy Bank Fell. Flat walking then follows as the route tracks the river, initially over easy grass paths, then boulder-hopping and duck-board-walking along a narrow track between the river and Raven Scar, the steep western slopes of Cronkley Fell. Finally a long section of easy, flat, grassy paths follows before the route crosses the river and gently rises through farmland to arrive at Hanging Shaw car park. The final section of the walk travels through a series of fields and along virtually traffic-free surfaced lanes to return to the High Force car park.
