Possibly the greatest lakeside walk in the country! From Glenridding take the Ullswater steamer to the start of this walk at Howtown.

The gently undulating walk back along Ullswater gives you fantastic views of the hills and lake. This whole section of the lake is devoid of roads and the walk uses paths and tracks running on or near the lake shore. There is the occasional short climb and the paths are sometimes rocky so stout footwear is recommended.

There are some excellent places along the walk for a picnic, some right by the lake on small (though stony) beaches. If you're lucky you may see a red squirrel.

Did this walk on a beautiful Winters day in December. Drove to Howton , got there for 9 am and parked in a layby just before the steamer jetty . The Lakeside walk is beautiful , rocky and undulating , not flat and boring like i was expecting , we only passed two walkers all day . Caught the steamer back to Howtown at 1.40 pm were we warmed up with a nice hot chocolate Thank you for the walk

Did this in Aug. but walked from Glenridding to Howtown & rested on the steamer on the way back. This is a fantastic walk, & the views from the steamer were truly amazing. It could be quite tough underfoot, so don't skimp on the footwear. It's been added to our list of favourites !! Mark & Karen Rowe

a good walk....9/10/05 drizzle but excellent views... a little steep in places and slippy and rough terrain... would not do it again as there are always better walks I think.. but a good one all the same...

This was a thoroughly enjoyable walk, especially for the dog. We parked at Howtown and took the steamer at the end for a relaxing journey back to our car.

Did this walk 30th April on a cool Saturday afternoon. The boat trip was hugely enjoyed by Saffy the Golden Retriever, although we had to stop her going overboard once or twice! Great walk, not strenuous, and topped off with a pint and a sandwich at the Patterdale Hotel - a perfect day!

We did this walk 2 days ago and are still talking about it. The views are spectacular, both from the steamer and the lakeside. It wasn't too strenuous and Lucy the pooch loved plodging in the lake at every available oportunity! Looking forward to doing it again in the near future.

I did this walk the 'wrong' way round to fit in with steamer times. Navigation was a breeze, and the walk itself deserves its reputation as a lakeland classic.
