Howtown - Rampsgill Head - Angletarn Pikes - Martindale - Howtown

Starting from Howtown, you gain height quickly as you climb the ridge of Steel Fell. After a quick descent you then climb on to the backbone of High Street. The summits of Red Crag, High Raise and Rampsgill Head are quickly attained as you follow the Roman road. From Rampsgill Head you could make a detour and climb to the summit of High Street itself or, like I did, leave it for another day and head for The Knott. From here we then walk to Angletarn Pikes. Watch out for the red deer grazing on the slopes of Rest Dodd. Once at Angle Tarn rest awhile and soak up the atmosphere. The way back to the car is by the unfrequented ridge leading to Beda Fell and then a gradual descent onto the valley floor.

Did you know that you can amend the estimated time given on all the walks by changing the average speed and amount of rest time in your details. It’s calculated using Naismith’s formula. When walking in a group you might consider entering a slower speed and increasing the rest time percentage and that should give you a more accurate time. Click Change my details on the website to experiment.

With a group of experienced walkers - admittedly all over 60 - I have twice attempted this walk, starting from Swarthbeck or Bonscale. Both times we have had to shorten the walk, returning by Bannerdale. If you can do this walk in 6 hours 23 minutes, congratulations. We couldn't. It's a great walk, but "moderate"? We really must be getting old! Rob Day
