The walk is mainly to the east of Kendal. After an initial climb to the hill on which the castle stands, it rises to Paddy Lane, from which there are good views of the hills of southern Lakeland. The terrain is track, pasture or tarmac, as there is a walk back through the streets to the town centre, while the climbs are short and not too demanding.
