This attractive walk in lower Kentmere offers a good alternative to those not wishing to venture into the high fells but still seeking some good views, not just of the surrounding higher fells but of lower-lying south Lakeland. The walk climbs gently to explore a pastoral, low-lying, grassy fell and its tracks leading to Grassgarth before returning to the valley and an easy ramble past the peaceful waters of Kentmere Tarn and back to the start. En route the walk passes near to a fine example of an old pele tower at Kentmere Hall, typical of a Border Country fortified house. On the return leg it passes Kentmere Pottery; look out for the peacock. The walk also has the merit of offering a choice of completing the full walk of around 8.4 miles, or if desired it can be easily shortened to around 6.70 miles if weather or time are not favourable.
