The scenery in Wharfedale is so stunning that we enjoyed this walk even on the wet day on which I recorded it. The outward leg is high above the river and level once you have made an initial gradual climb. There is a short drop to Starbotton, where you will find a pub if you turn right at Waymark 4, but note that it is closed on Mondays. The ascent from the bridge is steep in sections but it is not long and will bring you higher than on the outward leg, with even finer views.

Completed walk on 14/5/21 and the bridge repair at Starbotton has been completed and it is fully open. Very pleasant walk with fine views along the Dale

We did this lovely walk on 290321 but retraced our steps from Starbotton back to Kettlewell as the footbridge at Starbotton (waymark 9) is currently still closed following flood damage back in November 2020. The National Park notice makes it pretty clear that there is no other suitable crossing of the Wharfe at this point, the nearest point across being the road bridge back at Kettlewell at the start of the walk. Another option for a circular walk would be to go higher to the drovers road on either of the legs to/from Kettlewell, though that entails a bit more climbing.

We tried a variation of this walk after visiting Kettlewell their annual scarecrow festival, never having been to the area before. Great limestone scenery. We set off from Kettlewell at high level on the east side as per the instructions. Lots of stiles but almost all the stepped type easy for dogs. Plenty of sheep and cows as well so pooch has to stay on his lead. Recommend the Fox and Hounds at Starbotton, they are open all day and do good looking food. From Starbotton we then varied the walk and simply returned along the riverside path ( the Dales Way). An easy 2 hours or so and excellent views at all times. Both villages are gems.
