A delightful walk from Marske through an unnamed small side valley off the larger, more popular Swaledale. The undulating walk includes hamlets, fields, lanes and moorland as well as a little road-walking on a moorland road that sees hardly any traffic.
The walk starts from the lovely little holiday village of Marske, from where a pleasant stroll through a flat meadow then takes you up a steep, walled lane and across glorious flat moorland at the highest point of the route. A series of fields follows as the walk intersects the moorland hamlet of Washfold. From here a stroll along an almost traffic-free road and then a lane takes you to the farthest point of the walk at the deserted hamlet of Holgate. The route then starts the return journey through a series of sloping fields to arrive at the hamlet of Helwith, where the Marske Beck begins its life. A pleasant flat ramble follows through the fields that border the beck. A short but steep climb temporarily leaves the valley to intersect a stony road at Telfit Farm. The route then descends to cross the Marske Beck and follow the contours of the valley past Orgate Farm before intersecting and descending through a charming wood past the lovely little hamlet of Clints to return to Marske.
