This is only a short walk in Lakeland terms but a stunning one to say the least - and tougher than you might think! The route starts at Martindale and follows a terrace path towards Howtown before turning steeply uphill and following Steel End. After 300m of ascent you end at the spectacular rocky summit of Steel Knotts. The peak is one of only a couple of peaks that can only be summited by climbing rock (this one being one of the easiest and is only about 5ft high).
The route continues over the summit and proceeds to two other peaks, Brownthwaite Crag at 444m and Gowk Hill at 471m. These two peaks are not Wainwright Fells so are rarely visited by walkers, but are listed as Birkett Fells. The path then heads north before following a good path down through the length of Fusedale. Fusedale Beck is the main feature on the descent as either side is flanked by steep, grassy slopes.
