A fairly tough little walk from Middleton-in-Teesdale that starts with the ascent of the delightful valley of the Hudes Hope Beck and continues higher to climb up to the currick on Monks Moor. The return leg of the walk is entirely downhill, initially across the Open Access land of Monks Moor, then through grassy fields and farmsteads to return to Middleton. Compass skills are needed on this walk.
From the centre of Middleton-in-Teesdale the walk heads north up the valley of Hudes Hope Beck. The route through the lower valley is via a heavily wooded area on a surfaced road that rises very gently. The middle section is on unsurfaced tracks that rise very steeply at times, initially through woods then through sloping meadows alongside the woods. The final upper third opens out into flatter terrain and passes through areas showing signs of previous lead mining activity by way of derelict mining buildings, deep hushes and old spoil heaps. The route then intersects a surfaced road that enters Open Access land. A short, steep walk up the road is followed by the steepest section of the walk as the route leaves the road and climbs up a very steep but fairly short gully to arrive onto Monks Moor. The next 1.8 miles are across rough fell as the walk rises up the moor to intersect the currick on the summit of the moor at the highest point of the walk. After a little level summit-walking the terrain descends to the trig point on the lower slopes of the moor and in a further half a mile exits the Open Access land of the moor. The route continues to descend through grassy farmland with a little road-walking to arrive back into Middleton-in-Teesdale.
