Mill Side - Whitbarrow - Hervey Nature Reserve - Lord's Seat

Some typical and rather beautiful limestone scenery here, with limestone cliffs and a substantial re-emerging stream. Start at Mill Side and end at Beck Head, having walked up through the steep local woodland to the top of the limestone escarpment of Whitbarrow. Stroll through the Hervey Memorial Nature Reserve as far as Lord's Seat and then scramble down through the only gap in the Whitbarrow Scar cliffs. Walk back through the valley with the cliffs towering above and springs wetting your boots. There are a few fine old yews scattered along the route and small junipers can be found in the nature reserve. This walk is graded as moderate because of a single steep and treacherous descent! Mill Side is near the village of Witherslack, where you will find the well-thought-of Derby Arms.

2013: I redid this walk in May and it's a good time to go. The stunted blackthorns were stunning in flower. There were orchids, bluebells, primroses and the beginnings of wild garlic flowers, to name only the obvious ones.

A most enjoyable walk through varied limestone terrain. The summit plateau is spectacular and gives wide panoramic views. The descent is a straightforward hill path and shouldn't give any difficulty, though the smooth limestone needs care in the wet. Very clear instructions make this an easy to follow excursion.
