Starting from Langdale Valley you gain height quickly as you climb to Stickle Tarn, then take a leisurely walk around the tarn to the boulderfields and the entrance to Jack's Rake. At this point, those who feel Jack's Rake (some call it Jake's Rake) looks too difficult can take alternative routes.

An exhilarating scramble on what can be described as a narrow fissure in the rock-face at angles of between 45 - 50° with views looking back over Stickle Tarn, takes you to the summit of Pavy Ark. The height having been attained, the further summits of Harrison Stickle, Loft Crag and Pike of Stickle may be easily attained with little effort, affording views of the Langdale Valley and other fells.

There are several alternative routes back to the valley floor in case of inclement weather and several detours to take in the South-East Gully of Gummer's Crag below Loft Crag and the Stone Axe Factory on Pike of Stickle.

The walk then follows a route north-west across Martcrag Moor with views of the northern fells, with diversion to Martcrag Fell, to Stake Pass and a gentle walk back along the Mickleden Valley, with soaring views of Pike of Stickle to one side and Bow Fell to the other.
