Orton is one of those villages that is between places, here Tebay and Appleby; and does not have the attention it merits. Most people will find it tranquil and charming if they stop to look and it has a lot of possibilities for the walker across limestone pastures, with outstanding views of the northern edge of the Howgills. Although the summer of 2004 has produced a few wet patches, the going is generally very easy and the signposting good.

A lovely walk although the weather was very good! Despite the road between WPs 19 & 20 only being a B classification it is busy, fast and doesn't have a footpath, care needed with children/dogs. Excellent coffee shop next to the car park which also sells homemade chocolates, a great treat after the exertions.
