A great, mainly moorland walk from Parkhead Station high on Stanhope Common. The route starts and ends on railway paths. In between, good tracks lead down into the valley of the Stanhope Burn into an area of derelict buildings that were formerly part of a thriving lead-mining industry. The route then follows a long pull up a lane and then through fields to emerge onto open moorland. A long section of moorland-walking then follows before the route intersects an oasis of grassy farmland. The final lap is a long, slightly descending section of railway path that delivers you back to Parkhead Station.
From the popular Parkhead Station located on the Waskerley Way railway path, the route heads south initially on level ground and then descending Weatherhill Bank before changing direction and heading steeply down into the deep valley that carries the Stanhope Burn. From here the route starts a long pull uphill on a wide stony track through a series of farmsteads to arrive at the Open Access Land of Stanhope Common in the area called Park Plantation. The clear route then sticks closely to the perimeter wall of the plantation before descending on good stony or grassy tracks to ford the Stanhope Burn. Further moorland-walking follows before a final steep pull follows up through the green cultivated oasis of Steward Shield Meadow to intersect a railway path. A long easy walk along the railway path follows for a return to Parkhead Station.
