Patterdale is a stunning Lakeland village on the southern tip of Ullswater. It is a perfect location from which to tackle many of the Lakeland mountains in the north-eastern area. One of these mountains is Place Fell, around the northern and western sides of which Ullswater snakes its way. The route for this walk quickly heads away from the busy road through the village and along a diagonal route up the fellside to Boredale Hause. When at the Hause look out for the Chapel in the Hause – an early medieval chapel built for both Patterdale and Boredale. From the Hause the route follows a path north along a ridge towards the trig point on the summit of Place Fell. There are some amazing views from the top of this fell, especially from about 25m west from the trig point. From the trig point the route follows a path north-west and then south-west which heads down to a path near the shore of Ullswater. There are more spectacular views along this path all the way back to Patterdale and also up to Helvellyn's 3,000ft peak.

This is a great walk with wonderful views throughout. It is probably best to avoid the weekends if possible as the ascent section is a very popular. The directions are clear and easy to follow though the section between WM8-9 is faint in places. Just keep Blencathra in the distance and Birk Fell in view ahead and you'll reach the clear junction at WM9 at the head of a clear ghyll. Slight detours (right) to the two cairns between WM8 and WM9 give additional views. Also if you have time and the visibility is good the extension from WM9 to Birk Fell and back is worth the extra 0.4 miles. The initial descent from WM9 is steep but does afford spectacular views across Ullswater. Thank you Joe for a great afternoon.
