Green Bell is a delicious little hill, providing a sense of remoteness that is at odds with its height (just over 600m). The route crosses its satellite 'bump', Knoutberry, and traverses around its far flank before striking for the top. This route has the benefit of taking you into a remoter side valley, with fantastic views across the Yorkshire Dales.
From the top you can see right across the Eden Valley, to Blencathra, Helvellyn et al in the Lakes and to parts of the northern Pennines. The great velvety mounds of the Howgills nearer by complete the panorama.
The walk starts and finishes in the pretty Cumbrian village of Ravenstonedale. Food and drink can be got at the excellent Black Swan Hotel, which also has a small village shop for provisions.
This is a short walk but in poor visibility there are few features, so you need a map and compass and be prepared to do a bit of hill navigation.
