A glorious circular walk between the Teesdale villages of Romaldkirk and Cotherstone. The route covers panoramic, undulating field-walking on the eastern higher slopes of the Teesdale Valley, followed by a mainly railway path walk on the flat western side of the valley.
Field-walking from the picturesque ancient village of Romaldkirk takes the walker along the Teesdale Way to cross the River Tees at Eggleston Bridge. From here the route heads south along a surfaced track parallel to the river, before climbing steeply up through a wood to start a long section of field-walking with good views of the Teesdale Valley. The field-walking ends with a trip through a caravan park to re-cross the Tees and then the River Balder at the point where the Balder flows into the Tees. A long steep, pull up steps is followed by great wood-, field- and lane-walking that takes the walker on a loop to arrive in the lovely old village of Cotherstone. From the village a short lane- and field-walk then takes you onto the Tees Railway Path for a long, flat walk that includes a trip across a high viaduct spanning the valley of the River Balder for a return to Romaldkirk.
