Rutter Force is a spectacular waterfall situated about 2.5 miles south of Appleby. The walk starts on a minor road and soon joins a beck which is followed upstream to and then past the fall. Pastures and pleasant forest tracks are the main features after that, ending with twenty minutes on a road, unavoidable as there are no footpaths. The walk is really easy except for one extremely short section where no attempt has been made to clear fallen trees and I felt it necessary to upgrade the walk, although my notes will make it easier. There are lovely views from the higher sections and it is a tranquil area to walk in.

At point 3: you need to go through the gate on the left and THEN turn right along the field edge. There is no path right beside the beck. Between this point and the lane there is a lot of rampant, quite high foliage - very wet after some rain despite recent dry warm weather. Point 5: At the end of this instruction you expect to find a stile but this has gone, along with a lot of fencing. Point 10: This field has been divided in two so you need to first go through a gate in a fence and then head for the stile. It is not necessary to go through the double gates indicated - the path goes straight ahead to a narrow wooden gate. Point 13: there is no longer gate at the top of the hill. The narrower field mentioned is actually two, but with no gate between them. Point 14: The fallen trees have been removed but there is a lot of undergrowth. Point 16: There was no picnic table visible, nor is there a tyre. Point 17: There are still trees here. Point 18: The verge was also very overgrown and not very handy unless escaping an oncoming car. N. B The pub is very good but always closed on Monday and Tuesday.
