Rydal - Loughrigg Cave - Loughrigg Fell - Loughrigg Tarn - Rydal
Rydal is a perfect start location for a walk over Loughrigg and this walk takes in three major features of the area. The first is the enigmatic cave on the north side of the fell, the second is the summit with its spectacular views and the third is the tranquil, picturesque tarn.
Starting off in the beautiful Lakeland village of Rydal, this walk follows a popular footpath down to the lakeshore of Rydal Water for some stunning views towards Nab Scar to the north. The path then continues slightly uphill to the enigmatic cave on the north side of Loughrigg Fell. You can explore the cave if you wish, but beware that there have been some rock falls recently! The route continues above the caves and along a network of paths to the 335m summit of Loughrigg Fell.
From the trig col the views are superb in all directions. Lake Windermere is in view to the south, the Langdale Pikes and Bowfell to the west and the Fairfield Horseshoe to the north. A path descends directly from the summit, taking you down to the edge of Loughrigg Tarn, one of the most picturesque tarns in the whole country. Do take some time to walk down to the tarn and take in the breathtaking scenery.
The last leg of the walk takes you over the side of Loughrigg Fell under Ivy Crag and down to the River Rothay, which it follows north back into the village of Rydal.
