This is one of the most beautiful short walks you can do in this area. It starts off by Skelwith Bridge and follows a public footpath along the River Brathay to Skelwith Force, which is an amazing waterfall. The height is only 15ft or so but it's the sheer volume of water crashing over the rocks that makes this a waterfall to visit after heavy rain! After passing the waterfall the route continues along the edge of the River Brathay and up to the lakeshore of Elterwater. The views over the lake are stunning, with the Langdale Pikes attracting the gaze thanks to their unique outline.
From Elterwater the route gains a bit of height to make its way over to one of the most picturesque tarns in the whole lake district: Loughrigg Tarn. The tarn is protected by the steep, bracken-covered slopes of Loughrigg Fell and once on the other side, the views over the tarn to the Langdale Pikes and Bowfell are exquisite! It is simply a place to stop and enjoy the Lakeland scenery at its best.
