A challenging walk from Stanhope up into the hills on the south side of the dale for an interesting panoramic walk through fields and along lanes before encroaching on the northern fringes of the Open Access Land of Bollihope Common, passing through an unbelievable amount of derelict farm buildings. The route eventually leaves the hills and returns to the valley floor for a long pleasant walk back to Stanhope alongside the River Wear.
The walk starts from the west end of the village then crosses the river over the famous Stanhope Ford. Field- and lane-walking takes you through a caravan park before starting the steep rise out of the valley through more fields and lanes that takes the walker onto Open Access Land. The walk then passes through a series of derelict farms over terrain that offers up great views of the dale. The route eventually descends to cross the River Wear. Starting with a visit through another caravan park, the final long flat section of the walk travels along the narrow piece of land between the river and a railway line. A short road-walk returns the walker back into Stanhope.
