From Stanhope the route climbs steeply on easy to follow, stony tracks up through Ashes Quarry to the natural viewing platform that is Crawley Edge. From here there are outstanding views over the town and along the dale. The route continues up the fell on the gentle Weatherhill incline, a former railway track. Midway up the incline the walk deviates from the railway track and descends steeply at times down to the valley of the Stanhope Burn on a wide, stony track. From the valley there follows a long, gradual ascent on good tracks to High House Farm.
The walk then descends gradually through rough pastures preceding a short ascent to Pease Mires Farm, from where the terrain of grassy meadows and stony farm tracks once again descends back to the valley of the Stanhope Burn. The path then meanders along the high side of the delightful wooded valley for much of the route back to Stanhope.
