A walk of contrasts that includes wooded valleys, open moors and quiet by-roads in the mid-Weardale area of the North Pennines. The walk starts from the busy market town of Stanhope and heads north up the glorious wooded and rugged valley of the Stanhope Burn. A little stony track-walking follows alongside fields that leads onto the open moorland of Stanhope Common. The stony track continues to follow the natural contours of the vast moor before the route heads due south across rough moorland that takes the walker up to Long Hill, the highest point of the walk, with good panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Easy, flattish ridge-walking follows for a little over a mile to intersect the trig point on the spur of the grassy ridge at Crow Coal Hill. The route then descends off the ridge to intersect a minor metalled road running along the perimeter of the moor. The final section back to Stanhope is all downhill road-walking.
