A fairly hilly walk from the village of Stanley Crook, covering a good mix of terrain that includes a couple of railway paths, numerous enclosed lanes, grassy fields, and a wood. The route reveals several great panoramic views of the surrounding Durham countryside from the high sections of the route. All-in-all a nice diverse walk, however, unless you particularly like mud, then keep this walk for the drier months of the year.
The walk starts and ends on the Deerness Valley Railway path. In between, the route visits Billy Row, snuggling on the hillside between Crook and Stanley Crook before starting a gradual pull up the former trackbed of an old mineral railway to arrive at Sunniside, the highest point of the walk. From here the walk descends through fields to enter the Deerness Valley. A long walk then follows along the valley floor initially through fields and then a long narrow wood following the River Deerness to emerge into the village of East Hedleyhope. An ascent up a stony lane then takes you up to Stanley Hill after which a lane and then a wood leads you back onto the railway path for a pleasant walk back to Stanley Crook.
