A surprisingly delightful stroll, with no steep sections whatsoever, through woodland, glade and heath to Ratherheath Tarn, accompanied always by the prominent Lake District fells.

Note that from August 2017 parking in the Mill Yard is restricted to two hours and that it is monitored. There is no public car park so on-street parking must be found. Jim Grindle.

Completed on a warm sultry day – which it suited well as there is only gentle ascent and the wooded sections gave welcome respite from the sun.

This is a really beautiful walk, spoiled by incredibly bad descriptions. I did this walk twice within a couple of weeks, with different people, and both lots agreed that the wording was often misleading and sometimes inaccurate. This walk needs re-writing. (it also needs updating with details of the millyard...)

I was in an RA group led by Stan Gilroy and we all agreed that it was a beautiful walk. The main road is very dangerous to cross, though, and the start is better in the Mill yard where there is now a cafe, a pub and a bakery (serving refreshments also) plus lots of free parking. Jim Grindle.

A very good walk for a winter's day.
