This is only a short walk of less than four miles but does require a fair amount of effort getting up Steel Knotts. The route starts off by Martindale Church, which is all by itself at the top of the pass near Howtown. The route follows a terrace path round to Steel End and then ascends the steep route up to about the 400m contour. The views on the ascent are spectacular, showing the northern end of Ullswater at its best.
Once at the summit the route starts its descent on the western side of the fell and gently makes its way down past a second chapel near Christy Bridge before following the road back to the car park.
