Thirlmere and Great How

The walk can be based at Legburthwaite instead of Swirls car park but the facilities are no better. The car park is left for a permitted path through the woods along the edge of Thirlmere. This is well-signposted with white arrows on posts but these are low and may not be obvious, depending on the vegetation. At Legburthwaite the bridle-path to Sticks Pass is followed (although I cannot imagine how anybody would get a horse over the ladder-stiles) onto the open fellside, where a signpost indicates Swirls to the right. This path is not shown on any but the latest OS maps but is an old miners' track and for the most part is well-constructed and clear. It crosses a number of becks with long waterfalls.
